DENTIST Alfredo Paez of Cabuyao, Laguna emerged as the champion in the Davao leg of the 2018 Alphaland National Executive Chess Championship held at the Jardin del Roca Resort in Toril, Davao City last Oct. 27.
Paez defeated engineer Felipe Adlawan of Sarangani Province in the Alekhine defense in the sixth and final round to finish in a three-way tie for the top spot with lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe of Alabang, Muntinlupa and Lyndon Sombilon of Davao City with fivenpoints apiece.
But Paez, the 48-year-old head dentist of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic in Cabuyao, Laguna, edged both Orbe and Sombilon on tiebreaks to capture his first title in the monthly event organized by Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), under President/Chairman Prospero “Butch” Pichay.
“Winning the PECA 10th and final leg made my visit to Davao truly meaningful," said Paez.
The monthly rapid chess tournament was hosted by National Council on Disability Affairs Board of Directors member James Gumatao Infiesto and Atty. Jong Guevarra Jr.
Orbe defeated former barangay captain Jaime Joshua Frias of Cagayan de Oro City, while Sombilon, who was leading by 1/2 point before the last round, split the point with educator Roumundo Edades.
However, Paez, Orbe and Sombilon equally divided the combined P22,000 cash prizes for the top three finishers.
Edades and seven-time Philippine executive champion dentist Jenny Mayor finished tied for fourth to fifth with 4.5 points.
