VARIOUS quarters believe that Congressman-elect Martin G. Romualdez deserves to head the House of Representatives because of his reputation and record as a highly-effective solon.
His growing army of fans remembers Romualdez’s uncompromising stand against graft and corruption and outstanding performance when he first represented the first district of Leyte.
Besides, the United States-educated Romualdez, a lawyer, is committed to push the legislative agenda of President Rodrigo R. Duterte in the last three years of his six-year presidency.
Certainly, the returning Leyte congressman is among those who champion the cause of the poorest of the poor, the working class and other unfortunate members of Philippine society.
During the 16th Congress, Romualdez, president of the Philippine Constitution Association and husband of Rep. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez, was the undisputed House independent bloc leader.
It will be recalled that during the election campaign period, presidential daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Z. Duterte endorsed Romualdez as House speaker in the incoming 18th Congress.
Of course, nobody was surprised by the endorsement because Romualdez, who is also head of the influential Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), is a known ally and friend of the Dutertes.
Romualdez also said the excellent showing of administration-backed senatorial candidates in the last balloting was an affirmation of the people’s strong support for Duterte’s good governance.
He said President Duterte is always in touch with the ordinary people not only in the metropolis but elsewhere, describing the administration as clean, accountable and transparent.
