Show compassion

April 08, 2020

THE public expects the government to provide the necessary help to people afflicted with the deadly corona virus while Luzon and other parts of the country are under community quarantine.

And no less than House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, a lawyer and banker by profession, wants to ensure the “door-to-door” delivery of essential commodities to the patients.

The dependable and articulate Romualdez called on the people to show compassion and kindness to persons under investigation (PUIs), persons under monitoring (PUMs) and COVID-19 patients.

He said medicines, rice, sugar and other basic commodities ought to reach the doorsteps of the millions of beneficiaries during the enhanced community quarantine, which was extended to April 30.

Speaker Romualdez is co-chairman of the House Defeat COVID-19 Ad Hoc Committee and co-author of Republic Act (RA) No. 11469, otherwise known as the “Bayanihan Heal as One Act of 2020.”

Likewise, the Leyte solon, husband of Tingog party-list Rep. Yedda Marie K. Romualdez, a registered nurse and a former beauty queen, lamented reports of health workers being discriminated.

Ako Bisaya party-list Rep. Sonny Lagon echoed Romualdez’s position, saying that suspected COVID-19 patients and carriers should be spared of all inconveniences and help them stay indoors.

Lagon said helping people stay indoors would help guarantee the success of President Duterte’s extended ECQ in Luzon.

“We should stop discriminating our medical frontliners. They have been risking their lives and some even died so that other people live. They don’t deserve to suffer more,” added Lagon.

House Deputy Speaker and CIBAC party-list Rep. Eduardo “Bro. Eddie” Villanueva and Rep. Domingo Rivera also condemned the stoning of houses of COVID-infected people in the province of Iloilo.

The perpetrators of the stoning incident, they said, should be arrested so as to send a very strong message to others that government authorities will never tolerate such illegal act.

Without doubt, we cannot overemphasize the importance of identifying, arresting and filing charges against these lawless elements and others who sabotage efforts to win the battle against the virus.
