TOM Rodriguez has a unique way in making his own contribution for the needy during this corona lockdown that have truly disrupted our lives. He is a painter and he launched his own fund-raising drive, “Guhit Pantawid: Portraits for a Cause”. The money he will get to collect from it will be given to daily wage earners who now have no means of income while the corona pandemic is going on.
“It’s my first time to accept commissioned artworks and this is very special for me as it’s for a good cause,” he says. “I feel I have to do something to be of help to our less fortunate kababayans.”
He gets clients through social media and he then makes portraits of them. “After I do their portraits, I sign it and write a little message thanking them for helping out our poor brothers during these very difficult circumstances that we’re now facing.”
Tom was last seen playing the role of Stefano, his real life girl friend Carla Abellana’s ill-fated husband in “Love of My Life”, which is now temporarily resting because of the lockdown. Carla commended her inamorato for the humanitarian job that he is doing.
“Ang mga tinutulungan dito ni Tom sa project niya are the jeepney and taxi drivers, construction workers and street vendors na hand-to-mouth ang buhay,” says Carla. “Kundi sila magtatrabaho, wala silang kikitain sa araw-araw so they really need financial assistance. Sana, marami pang magpa-paint ng portraits nila kay Tom.”
Carla posted in her social media account the portraits painted by Tom and the donations they gave for his project. “Inaabot siya ng midnight sa pagpe-paint as he really works very hard to meet his deadlines for the clients who want to make a donation. Bale ang isang portrait, mahigit one day niyang ginagawa. Enjoy naman siya kahit pagod siya and he feels very useful during this health crisis we’re now all going through.”
They don’t really see each other much because of the lockdown except online. “Let’s follow the request of the authorities to just stay home to prevent the virus from spreading,” says Tom. “It’s the best way to be of help in this crisis. And let’s all just think positively. Huwag tayong mawawalan ng pag-asa. Sa awa ni God, matatapos din ito. Let’s just take advantage of the time we’re at home to bond with our respective families and get plenty of rest.”
