JASMINE Curtis-Smith moved to GMA-7 last year and she was given a supporting role in her first soap as a Kapuso, “Pamilya Roces”, which proved to be short-lived. She’s now given a much meatier role in her second assigment, “Descendants of the Sun”, as Capt. Moira Defensor, the daughter of a general who falls in love with a soldier who’s lower than her in rank, Rocco Nacino as Sgt. Diego Ramos or Wolf. The response of viewers to her team up with Rocco is so positive in terms of its “kilig” factor that many of them are now rooting for the forbidden romance between Moira and Diego.
“It’s really amazing the way viewers warmed up to the Diego-Moira tandem,” she says. “When we read the comments on social media, they’re really cheering for us and urging us to fight for our love kahit na pinagbawalan si Diego ng father kong general to have a relationship with me. Wala kaming bashers at all. They really like us.”
Moira is a brave and courageous woman who’s willing to defy her dad because of her love for Diego. How is it portraying her?
“It’s funny kasi kung minsan, nadadala ko 'yung character hanggang sa pagtulog ko,” she laughs. “Napapanaginipan kong sumasaludo ako at nagsasalita ako ng ‘Yes, sir! Yes, sir!’ I really enjoy playing my role kasi mas naiintindihan ko na ang situation ng mga sundalo. They’re trained to respect not only each other but also other people whom they should be willing to extend help at all times. Si Moira, she might look very tough, but deep within, she has a soft heart. Lalo na when it comes to her love for Diego, kahit may humahadlang sa kanila kasi magkalayo ang kanilang work and social status.”
How is it working with Rocco? “We’ve worked sa ‘Pamilya Roces’ but we had very few scenes there kasi iba ang kapareha namin. But dito, we’re together a lot of times at marami kaming napag-uusapan about our personal likes and dislikes. We even share videos ng mga napapanood namin. Marami na ngang nagtatanong kung kailan ba bibigay si Diego para mag-smile na rin kay Moira, but we don’t know yet kunsaan pupunta ang love story nila, so abangan nyo na lang po.”
She says doing the show is no easy task as their locations are always far from the city. “We shoot in the mountains of Tanay, in Batangas, and in Quezon na halos umabot na sa Baler, lalo yung scenes na kampo ng mga rebelde. Puro malalayo, but I think nakakatulong din kami sa domestic tourism, like when we shot sa Fortune Island at naipakita namin ang kagandahan ng place na yon.”
How’s her Ate Anne who’s in Australia now to deliver her and Erwan Heussaff’s first baby? “She’ll be giving birth anytime now at nagpaalam na ako sa GMA and sa director namin, si Dominic Zapata, na as soon as that happens, aalis muna ako sandali to be with them kasi I want to see my niece. First pamangkin ko 'yun, e. Pumayag naman sila. Nangako naman akong babalik din ako agad.”
As we write this, Anne has already given birth (Monday) so we supposed Jasmine will be leaving soon to visit her Ate and her niece.
