Ronnie back to playing lead role

February 01, 2020

RONNIE Alonte made quite an impression in the surprise hit of MMFF 2016, “Vince & Kath & James”. Most people thought he’s on the verge of stardom. But as luck would have it, it’s his co-stars in the movie, Joshua Garcia and Julia Barretto, who zoomed to fame with their newly formed love team, doing a string of films and TV shows while Ronnie got waylaid along the way. But now, Ronnie gets another chance at stardom and he’s paired with his real life girlfriend no less, Loisa Andalio, in Star Cinema’s special Valentine offering, “James & Pat & Dave”, which also stars Donny Pangilinan.

“This is a sequel to ‘Vince & Kath & James’,” says Direk Theodore Boborol, who helmed both movies. “In a love triangle movie, laging may naiiwan, 'yung hindi pinili na walang happily ever after. And in the first movie, that’s James as played by Ronnie, who was not chosen by Kath. So dito sa sequel, we’ll see what happens to James, ang hindi napili. In ‘James & Pat & Dave’, he’s being punished by his parents for neglecting his studies so he is sent to the province to reform. Doon niya mami-meet si Loisa as Pat, na ex-girlfriend ni Donny as Dave who’s trying naman to win her back.”

Does he see the same chemistry between Ronnie and Loisa that he was able to mine successfully before in the JoshLia love team? “Magkaiba sila, e. Kasi when JoshLia was paired before, hindi sila magkakilala. Unlike Ronnie and Loisa na magka-on na talaga way before nagsimula ang movie nila.”

Is there some pressure to surpass the success of the first movie? “No pressure na mahigitan 'yung una. Ang mindset namin is to just come up with a really good movie, yung mapaganda ito. At yung first movie, entry yun sa MMFF so iba rin. Swerte lang kami, ang playdate namin on February 12, maganda ang timing kasi malapit sa Valentine’s Day and we guarantee all lovers na manonood nito sa Day of Hearts na this is the perfect kilig romance movie for them.”

How does Ronnie feel now that the new movie is focused on him?

“I feel so blessed,” he says. “Biro mo, nagka-part 2 ang first movie, and it’s focused on me as James, so I’m really very grateful to Star Cinema for giving me and Loisa this opportunity to star in our own movie together. Ang tagal naming hinintay ito, e. Ako, I’m really excited kasi bale tatlong taon akong nawala sa movies at ngayon lang ako nakabalik in a lead role again. Ang ganda nga ng pasok ng 2020 for us. Bagong taon, a new door opens for us, so sinabi namin talaga na gagalingan namin to show Star Cinema na worth it kaming pagtiwalaan ng ganitong sarili naming movie.”
