THEA Tolentino is one of GMA’s youngest kontrabidas so it’s not surprising after playing villain to Sanya Lopez in “Haplos”, she now plays antagonist to Kris Bernal in “Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko”, as a transwoman who is Kris’ former husband, played by Jason Abalos, who had a sex change operation and she later becomes Kris’ rival over Rayver Cruz. Doesn’t she mind playing the role of a former man?
“Not at all,” she says. “I find the role very challenging and I think it’s an honor na mabigyan ako ng ganitong chance dahil hindi naman lahat, nabibigyan ng ganitong pagkakataon. Siyempre, kinakabahan din ako noong una but nag-research ako nang husto to prepare for it at para ma-interpret ko naman siya nang maayos.”
She also watched other transwomen on the internet. “Tinitiningnan ko not only how they look but also how they move and how they talk. Pinakamahirap 'yung baguhin ang boses ko kasi ang transgenders daw, hindi talaga nababago ang boses at mababa pa rin. Naninibago ako kasi masakit sa lalamunan but I’m sure I will eventually get used to it. Our director, Mark de la Cruz, also guided me kung paano ko gagawin ang role ko. Si Ken Chan, tinuruan din niya ko kung paano niya binago ang voice niya when he played a transgender in ‘Destiny Rose’.”
Thea’s last relationship was with her batchmate in “Protege”, Mikoy Morales and they were on for a couple of years. Has she since found a new love after him? “No. At hindi rin naman ako naghahanap. Trabaho muna.”
How is it working with Kris and Rayver? “Masaya. Parehong magaling umarte and very professional kaya magaan katrabaho. We’re all excited sa pagsisimula ng show namin sa ere on October 22 replacing ‘The Stepdaughters’. Nagtutulung-tulong kami para mas mapaganda ang show and we’re all praying na mag-click sana ito sa viewers para tumakbo kami nang matagal sa ere.”
