8 Chinese nabbed in Makati illegal online gambling raid

EIGHT Chinese nationals  on Thursday were arrested by combined agents of the National Capital Region Police Office and the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group in a raid in a posh Makati City subdivision where they reportedly are maintaining an illegal online gambling establishment, NCPRO chief, Police Major General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar said yesterday.

The eight identified as male Chinese nationals Chenchen Li, Yo Hong, Jian Cai, Chijin Lei, Yaowli Xiong, Yufei Lin and Cun Peng and the lone female identified as Huimin Li were apprehended inside no. 22-A Briones Street in San Lorenzo Village in Barangay San Lorenzo, Makati City at 10 p.m. Thursday, the official said.

Eleazar said that members of the NCRPO Regional Special Operations Unit, the PNP-ACG headed by Police Brigadier General Marni C. Marcos Jr. and the Bureau of Immigration were involved in the raid which was conducted on the strength of a search warrant for violation of Republic Act  10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 in relation to Presidential Decree 1602 as amended by RA 9287 issued by Judge Bonifacio Pascua of the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 56.

RA 9287 is an act increasing the penalties against illegal number games including illegal online gambling.

Recovered during the raid were desktop computers, laptops, modem, router, cellular phones and the passports of the eight. All suspects were taken to the NCRPO-RSOU headquarters for documentation and proper disposition shortly after their apprehension, Eleazar said.
