‘Akyat-bahay’ suspect resists arrest, dies in gun scuffle with responding policemen
A suspected “akyat bahay” suspect was killed while his cohort managed to escape when they were cornered by the police after sneaking into a house in Quezon City early Friday morning.
Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director, Police Brigadier General Ronnie S. Montejo identified the slain suspect through a driver’s license and bgy. identification as Arnel Elcano, 52, of No. 30 San Juan Bautista St. Bgy. Payatas.
Montejo said policemen identified as Police Captain John Wayne Verzosa and Police Corporal Rocky Opiana were hurt after reportedly stabbed by the suspects.
Investigation showed that at about 12:45 a.m., the policemen from Batasan Police Station (PS 6) under PLtCol. Romulus Gadaoni were patrolling in their area in Bgy. Payatas A when they were approached by a certain Ricardo Caro asking for police assistance.
Caro informed them that his niece identified as Angeline Contiga called him and told that two suspicious males sneaked in their residence at No. 51F Santo Niño interior, Bgy. Payatas A.
Upon arrival in the said place, Caro pointed to Elcano and his unidentified companion as the intruders.
The suspects were ordered to yield peacefully and drop to the ground. However, instead of surrendering, Elcano pulled out a dagger and suddenly attacked PCpl Opiana and stabbed him in the face.
PCpt Verzosa tried to grab the knife but he was also stabbed in the left leg.
Versoza said that he was left with no option but to shoot Elcano during the scuffle.
Elcano’s companion managed to escape.
The wounded policemen were rushed to the PNP General Hospital.
SOCO recovered a double bladed dagger knife, a sling bag containing two sachets of shabu, and an improvised glass totter including five cartridge cases for cal. 9MM.
PBGen. Montejo commended the two policemen for their bravery and courageous acts in confronting the armed suspects. He also appreciated the vigilance and prompt reporting of the incident by the witnesses.
