Bilibid, other BuCor jails COVID-free

March 18, 2020

THE New Bilibid Prisons in Muntinlupa including the other prison facilities under the Bureau of Corrections' supervision remained COVID-19 free.

BuCor spokesperson Bucor Gabriel Chaclag thus declared yesterday, adding prison officials and personnel have been conducting a massive information drive to educate inmates on personal hygiene.

"So far we have no PUIs (Persons under investigation). BuCor remains Covid19-free and we hope and pray to stay that way. We have distributed alcohol and protective masks. They also try not to be close together," Chaclag said.

According to Chaclag, BuCor chief Gerald Bantag has put in place stringent measures to contain the spread of the dreaded coronavirus in prison facilities, especially at NBP.

The measures implemented in prisons were in line with President Duterte's recent memorandum placing the entire Luzon including Metro Manila under the enhanced community quarantine, he continued.

"Here in BuCor, DG (Director General) Bantag has ordered strict measures in line with the government national action plan. Since Luzon is in an enhanced community quarantine, all facilities are off limits to visitors except food deliveries that go through stringent screening."

"We also have purchased PPEs (Personal Protective Equipment) and misting machine to disinfect our areas, personnel and equipments. We are always in coordination with local authorities and have established arrangements with partner hospitals in case of a Covid-19 incident," Chaclag said in a message to reporters.

Apar from NBP, the other facilities under BuCor's supervision are Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong City, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Occidental Mindoro, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.

BuCor recently suspended visitation privileges of prisoners in NBP and other penal facilities under its supervision following the rise of coronavirus cases in the country. #
