Bureau of Immigration nabs fugitive behind illegal website of ‘Manga-Mura’ comics

A JAPANESE-German-Israeli fugitive who was wanted by Japanese authorities for infringement of the Copyright Law was arrested on Sunday by agents of the fugitive search unit (FSU) of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

FSU head Bobby Raquepo identified the fugitive as Romi Hoshino a.k.a. ‘Zakay Romi’, 28.  He was arrested at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Raquepo said Hoshino, who was the manager of “Manga-Mura”, an illegal viewing website of Japanese cartoons popularly known as Manga which operated from January 2016 to April 2018, will be detained at the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending deportation proceedings.

He said the Association of Copyrights of Japan estimated Manga-Mura’s cost of damages to be approximately 320 billion yen (2.9 billion USD), which was said to be the worst violation in the history of the Copyright Law of Japan.
