THE Quezon City Police District (QCPD) has filed a criminal complaint against a suspected purveyor of fake news against Quezon City Mayor Josefina ‘Joy’ Belmonte amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
QCPD Director PBGen Ronnie S Montejo said the suspect will face raps for violation of Art. 154 (1) of the Revised Penal Code (RPC) as amended by Sec. 18 of RA 10951.
The QCPD Anti-Cybercrime Team (QCPD-ACT) filed a complaint against the suspect from Quezon City, after a thorough investigation showed that the respondent was responsible in the spread of fake news that the office of Mayor Belmonte will give daily hygiene kits with P3,000 to every household of Barangay Sangandaan, Quezon City.
The police obtained a certification from the Office of Mayor Belmonte which refuted the matter and said that it was fake news which causes chaos and misinformation.
The case was submitted before Quezon City Assistant Prosecutor Ma. Cecilia A. Estoesta with NPS Docket No. XV-03-INV-20D-02368.
PBGen Montejo ordered the ACT to track more sources of fake news and pursue those who spread it. May this serve as a stern warning to fake news peddlers, he added.
