A member of a gunrunning syndicate involved in the proliferation of illegal drugs was killed when he engaged lawmen in a shootout during police operation yesterday morning in Pasay city.
Ferdinand Lerit of 143 E1 St. Flores Compound, Bgy. 176 Zone 18 succumbed to bullet wounds in the body while being rushed to Pasay City General Hospital while his brother Dwight Lerit, a gym instructor, and Ernie Tulta were arrested by police.
Pasay City police chief P/Col. Bernard Yang said joint elements of Station Intelligence Section (SIS) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and Malibay Police Community Precinct (PCP) were about to serve a search warrant issued by Judge Wilhelma Jorge-Wagan of Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 111 at the house of Lerit at around 6 a.m. when the suspect fired successive shots towards the approaching policemen, hitting one of the operatives who was wearing bullet proof vest.
Sensing that their lives were in danger, the lawmen retaliated, hitting Lerit in the body while several of his suspected clients who were inside his house escaped by climbing to the roof.
Police recovered from the slain suspect a cal. 38 revolver, a cal. 45 pistol, several pieces of ammunition, 40 plastic sachets containing an undetermined quantity of shabu and blue book containing the list of names of his clients, the amount and quantity of illegal drugs they purchased.
