Gun ban offenders over 3K

THE number of gun ban offenders arrested by agents of the Philippine National Police since last January 13 up to yesterday rose to over 3,100 as PNP chief, Director General Oscar D. Albayalde ordered a much stricter gun check ahead of the May 13 national and local elections to stem the possibility that weapons could be used to disrupt the holding of an orderly polls.

According to PNP spokesman, Senior Superintendent Bernard M. Banac,  total of 3,105 persons including 2,924 civilians, 32 policemen and five soldiers, have been arrested over the past 13 weeks for violating the prohibition on the unauthorized carrying of firearms and other deadly weapons during the election period.

The other gun ban offenders arrested include 44 elected officials, seven personnel from other law enforcement agencies, two Bureau of Jail Management and Penology personnel; 57 security guards; two members of the Civilian Active Auxiliary or militia force;  three foreign nationals; 23 members of threat groups; and six members of private armed groups.
