THE Special Mayor's Reaction Team (SMaRT) team headed by Maj. Jhun Ibay was commended by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno for swiftly acting on information regarding an illegal cockfighting taking place inside the Manila North Cemetery amid an enhanced community quarantine being enforced on orders of the national government.
In his report to Moreno, Ibay said that during their operation the other day, two were nabbed while six others escaped, including two barangay officials.
Ibay said SMaRT monitored the activity which was posted on social media, where even officials from Barangay 129 in Caloocan City were allegedly involved.
Immediately, Ibay laid out the operation in coordination with the Blumentritt Police Community Precinct (PCP) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team of the Manila Police District. The operation was conducted at around 11:30 a.m. on Good Friday along 29th Street inside the Manila North Cemetery.
The two cockfighters nabbed were identified as Christopher Fernandez, 43, and Ronnie Ignacio, 31, both residents in the cemetery compound in Sta. Cruz, Manila. Two injured cocks and P620 betting money were also confiscated.
Ibay said six were able to flee as they sensed the arrival of the police, including Bgy. 129 Caloocan officials Brix John Rolly L. Reyes and a certain ‘Mac-Mac’; as well as barangay kagawads Alfie Lacson, Romualdo Reyes, John Cris Domingo and the alleged operator, a certain ‘Cabron, ’ all of Barangay 131 also in Caloocan City.
