MAYOR Isko Moreno announced that next week, the city of Manila will start delivering the tablets and laptops he had vowed to provide teachers and students in the city’s public schools, in preparation for the planned, blended, distant learning amid the pandemic.
Moreno said the entire package includes pocket wifi for the teachers and SIM cards loaded with 10GB data allocation monthly for the students.
The mayor said the city government is doing everything to help Manila’s students and teachers to cope with the ‘new normal’ as classes are already slated to resume.
Under the state which classes will be conducted, Moreno noted that the teachers and students would need gadgets to aid them and knew that this would not be affordable to all of them, so that he decided to extend much-needed support.
Moreno earlier announced that the city government had allotted over P900 million for the purchase of at least 110,000 tablets and 10,000 laptops for the use of public school students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and teachers, respectively.
The mayor assured that the company chosen to supply the said devices has enough numbers of service centers to cover the warranty, in case of a defect or malfunction.
The said devices, he added, will form part of city properties and will be returned once the students are done using them, so that others may be able to use them too.
It will be recalled that no less than Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones had earlier lauded Moreno for properly coordinating with her department as to the kind of gadgets that should be used for the implementation of blended learning for students amid the pandemic and for even exceeding the minimum requirements set by DepEd.
Briones said Moreno inquired and sought guidance as to what kinds of devices may be used including the required features or specifications, so as to meet the standards set by the DepEd, noting that there are a lot of offers of affordable tablets going around, since there is now a ready market for it. She said that there are set standards like capacity and functions that have to be complied with.
