AFTER releasing funds to cover the three-month pension of registered senior citizens totalling P1,500 each from January to March, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno announced that the same amount will also be received by persons with disabilities (PWDs) as he assured that the financial assistance for students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and the Universidad de Manila (UDM) will also be given.
Based on data from the social welfare department under its chief Re Fugoso, the number of PWDs total 4,681 and each of them will also get P1,500 for a total of over P7 million. The aid will be given to the barangay heads who will distribute them right at the doorsteps of the recipients.
The budget for the more than 65,000 senior citizens meanwhile, is about P97 million.
The provision of such cash allowances including P500 monthly for Grade 12 students, PWDs, solo parents and senior citizens and then P1,000 monthly for PLM and UDM students, are contained in Manila City Ordinances number 8564 and 8565 which were passed by the Manila City Council under Vice Mayor and presiding officer Honey Lacuna, Majority Floorleader Joel Chua and members of the majority bloc last year.
The ordinances took effect beginning January this year and were passed on the initiative of Moreno, as part of the local government's social amelioration stimulus package for qualified and deserving Manilans.
Based on a list provided by PLM President Emmanuel Leyco, there are 2,680 students at PLM, for which the total allocation by the city reached over P9.6 million.
Moreno said the students are supposed to use the funds for their studies but since there are no classes, he urged them to instead use the money to help their parents provide their basic needs at home.
Meanwhile, the mayor once again appealed for the residents to stay home and follow the enhanced community quarantine saying this is the only way to be totally safe from the virus.
‘Proteksyunan nyo ang inyong sarili. Pag ‘yan ang ginawa ninyo, para n’yo na ding pnroteksyunan at iningatan ang inyong mga mahal sa buhay,’ he said.
