Isko: Send donations for homeless thru city gov’t

WHILE expressing his admiration and appreciation for those who extend help to the homeless and streetdwellers by giving them food, Mayor Isko Moreno called on such kind-hearted individuals to use the city government so that their kindness will not be taken advantage of or abused in any way.

Moreno made the call in his live public address, while thanking as usual those who have been donating food items for the benefit of the homeless people that have been put in a designated common shelter since the community quarantine began. Among those he mentioned were the fans of real and reel loveteam Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla called ‘KathNiel Fandom’ who donated food items.

According to Moreno, the city government rounded up all streetdwellers and vagrants or homeless on the second day of the community quarantine’s imposition and had them brought to the Del Pan Sport Complex and the San Andres Sports Complex where they are given three square meals a day aside from temporary shelter, complete with hygiene kits.

Recently, Moreno said he is making the rounds of the city and noticed families turning the streets, sidewalks and even islands into their own dwelling, specially in areas where some regularly bring goods and food.

“Maganda tumulong, natutuwa naman ako.. it’s a very noble act for any person to help those people you see on the streets, pero kung gusto n’yo talaga tumulong, dalhin niyo na lang po sa lokal na pamahalaan kasi hindi nyo napo alam kung sino ang tunay na nangangailangan,” Moreno said.

According to the mayor, those who are being taken cared of in the city’s designated shelters are those who have been living on the streets of Manila even before the COVID-19.

Moreno said the city government took all of the streetdwellers and the homeless and left no one behind.  He laments reports that there are some who take advantage of or even harass motorists into giving them money.

“‘Yung iba, di natin masisi siguro dahil sa hirap ng buhay, they are taking their chances me nangangatok na  nga ng mga kotse.  Baka tayo na rin minsan ang nagkukulang. Baka pinamimihasa na natin,” he said.

“There is a proper way of doing it. Maganda ang ginagawa ninyo kasi minsan nakikita ko,  namimigay ng pagkain sa kalsada. Salamat sa kabutihan nyo pero  pwede din yan na ganun din ang purpose… ‘yung  nakakatulong ka na, tama pa ang natutulungan natin. ‘Yung wala nang nagmamahal o nagmamalasakit sa kanila. The mere fact na nasa kalye sila bago mag-COVID,” Moreno added.

He guaranteed those who will opt to use the city to help the real homeless and streetdwellers that just like all donations coming in, whatever they will give will immediately reach the deserving beneficiaries.

Sharing how the city attends to the homeless and streetdwellers under their care, Moreno said:“ Me paliguan sila, may chi-cha (food) sa umaga, chi-cha sa tanghali, chi-cha sa gabi. Kumpletos rekados, alagang parlor.”

“Maganda naman ang layunin ninyo and I love and thank you for that pero para di maabuso ang kabutihan nyo, ilagay po natin sa tamang proseso.. walang burukrasya dahil modesty aside, we act as fast as we can and we guarantee na lahat ng bigay ninyo ay mapupunta sa nangangailangan,” Moreno stated.
