MANILA Mayor Isko Moreno has ordered all concerned City Hall departments to mobilize for the orderly observance of Undas.

Moreno  ordered department of public services chief Kenneth Amurao and city engineer Armand Andres to clean up the Manila North Cemetery and Manila South Cemetery and rid them of informal settler-families (ISFs) and garbage mounds  created by the squatters.

Amurao said about 70 ISFs have already been removed and the clearing operations continue, saying the spaces to be vacated will be allotted for ambulances and an emergency team personnel station.

Amurao said some of the ISFs have built concrete homes illegally inside the MNC and the families are putting up resistance while others who had been evicted have returned.

“Binato pa nga kami ng tae nung unang punta namin nina SMART chief Maj. Jhun Ibay,” Amurao said as he bared that at least 12 truckloads of garbage have already been collected during the ongoing cleanup leading to the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day  next week.

Meanwhile, Moreno also ordered the putting up of help desks to assist cemetery visitors, especially the senior citizens and persons with disabilities, and appealed to the public to dispose of their garbage properly.

Moreno also said no vendors will be allowed inside the two cemeteries, and noted that for the past several years corrupt city employees had been fighting over the collections from the vendors.

“The main purpose of Undas is to pay respects to departed loved ones and not to make profit out of it. The observance should be orderly and solemn,” the mayor added.
