After Mayor Abby called for stop to ‘spreading of lies’
FORMER Makati City mayor Junjun Binay lost his cool during a candidates’ debate Saturday evening in Makati organized by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) held in a local church after his elder sister, Makati Mayor Abby Binay, called on candidates to “stop spreading lies.”
“Sa natitirang panahon sa ngayon sa kampanya tigilan na ang pagkakalat ng kasinungalingan, tigilan na ang pagkakalat. Tigilan ang pagyuyurak sa aking pagkatao at sa aking asawa. Hindi kayo mananalo nang ganyan,” the mayor said before taking her seat beside her brother.
In the video of the incident that went viral, Junjun was seen arguing heatedly a few seconds later with his sister, forcing a stop to the proceeding and the intervention of the police, the organizers and even their father, former Vice President Jejomar ‘Jojo’ Binay, who protectively led Abby away.
Junjun then took the microphone and accused Abby of “glaring” at him.
“Alam mo Ate Abby, nandito tayo. Puwede po katahimikan, pinandidilatan po ako ng kapatid ko,” said Junjun in defense of his behavior that organizers said was a “shock” to them.
The elder Binay said he was also dismayed by the incident and gave assurances he will deal with his children, when asked by the media for a reaction.
The PPCRV, which organized the forum, acknowledged that the incident came as a shock. “It was unexpected... I think they got emotional,” said Dr. Arwin Serrano of PPCRV National.
But making light of the incident, Abby, according to her camp, continued with her sortie afterwards at Bgy. Guadalupe Viejo.
She also wondered why her younger brother was so heated up by her remark.
“Did I attack him even once?” she asked.
“Tumira ba ‘ko kahit isang beses? Hindi ba puro sila (Junjun camp) ang tapon nang tapon ng puro kasinungalingan? Itigil na ang kasinungalingan,” she said.
