A NINE-year-old girl died while his elder sister was injured when a speeding passenger jeep hit them while crossing a road Friday afternoon in Caloocan City.

Mary Edlyn Navarro succumbed to severe head and body injuries while undergoing medical treatment at the Dr. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center while her 11-year-old sister also suffered injuries but was declared out of danger by her attending physician at Caloocan City Medical Center.

Caloocan police traffic investigator P/Cpl. Job Zalun said the driver of passenger jeep (PVV-921) identified as John Forio, 32, of 24 Magtanggol St. Caloocan City surrendered to authorities after the incident.

Investigation showed that the victim and her elder sister were crossing on the pedestrian lane on A. Mabini Street heading towards J. Ramos Street at around 1:45 p.m. when the speeding passenger jeep driven by Forio struck them.

Mary Edlyn’s body was run over by the front and rear tires of the vehicle while her elder sister sustained injuries when she fell to the pavement. Both were rushed to Caloocan City Medical Center but Mary Edlyn was later transferred to Dr. Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center where she was declared dead at around 4:48 p.m.

Forio claimed that the brake of his passenger jeep failed, but police said he will still be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury.
