ALERT agents of the Bureau of Customs at the Central Mail Exchange Center of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport seized some 757 pieces of live tarantulas worth P310,000 from Poland.

BOC-NAIA chief Mimel Talusan said the tarantulas which can reportedly cause blindness were confiscated on April 1 and were turned over to the DENR Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit (DENR-WTMU) at the Central Mail Exchange Center in Pasay City.

The tarantulas, classified as endangered wildlife species, were concealed in gift-wrapped oatmeal and cookies which were sent from Poland by a certain Wojciech Pakasz and consigned to Jesse Camaro, of Caloocan City.

Talusan said violators of Illegal Wildlife Trading may face imprisonment from one year to two years and a fine of P20,000 to P200,000 based on R.A. 9147 (Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act) or three years but not more than six years imprisonment or a fine of not more than P300,000 under unlawful importation pursuant to RA 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act).
