A MAYOR from a town in Maguindanao province was shot dead in front of a hotel Monday night in Malate, Manila.
Mayor Abdul Wahab Sabal, 45, of Sultan Sumangka (formerly Talitay), died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds in the body.
A probe by the Manila Police District-Police Station 9 showed the incident happened at around 10 p.m. in front of the Manra Hotel located at the corner of Quirino Avenue and Leveriza Street in Malate while the victim was about to enter the hotel.
The victim reportedly attended a convention in Pasay City. The victim was with his wife Mohana and bodyguard PCpl. Alwal Guimad, 41, of the Talitay Municipal Police Station. They just got off the mayor’s vehicle, a gray Toyota Fortuner, to check in at the hotel when the mayor was shot.
While unloading their things from the car, successive shots rang out and the victim fell face down at the main entrance of the hotel. His companions were unharmed.
Police said the hotel’s glass door was shattered due to the commotion by the victim’s companions who tried to enter the establishment during the shooting incident.
CCTV footages showed that an unidentified man shot the mayor. He was seen waiting across the street. He then boarded a vehicle and sped away after the shooting.
Police recovered 5.56 mm shells from the crime scene.
In 2016, Sabal and his brother Montasir were included in President Rodrigo Duterte’s list of politicians who are allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade. This led to Sabal’s arrest and inquest proceedings at the Department of Justice.
Sabal, who was then the vice mayor, was also probed for the bombing incident at a night market in Davao City in the same year.
