Makati City police chief checked for COVID-19

Debold M. Sinas

NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director, Major General Debold M. Sinas yesterday ordered the NCRPO Health Service to check Makati City Police Station chief, Colonel Rogelio Simon amid reports he has been exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms.

Journal Group sources said that past 9 p.m. Sunday, a team of NCRPO doctors complete with protective equipment and suits went to the Makati City police headquarters to check Simon who reportedly wants to continue with his duties even while quarantined in his office.

Sinas ordered the chief of the NCRPO Regional Health Service to place Simon under strict medical monitoring and have him and his men quarantined if needed.

The NCRPO has ordered the distribution of multi-vitamins as well as face masks and gloves to NCRPO personnel manning Quarantine Checkpoints all over Metro Manila in order to protect them from the virus.

Acting on an instruction from Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo M. Año, the NCRPO chief likewise ordered all five NCRPO District Directors to strictly enforce the quarantine rule in all communities in their areas.

“I am ordering increased mobile and foot patrols to go inside their homes. We have to go after people who are doing nothing but talk with their neighbors or even drink in public,” Sinas said.

However, he ordered his men to allow the unhampered passage of people with quarantine pass specifically health and other essential workers.

Sinas said he  see to it that his officers and men are protected too from the virus since they are being confronted by possible COVID-19 carriers as they man their checkpoints.

This was proven in the case of two San Juan City policemen who went after a suspected COVID-19 carrier after she tried to escape while about to be escorted to the Quirino Hospital in Quezon City last Thursday afternoon.

The NCRPO director said they also have to protect their officers because they would be dealing too with possible COVID-19 carriers as they continue to man checkpoints in areas to and from Metro Manila as part of the Duterte government’s ‘community quarantine’ program.

Police are also under orders from PNP chief, Gen. Archie Francisco F. Gamboa to ensure stringent social distancing measures in the country and prohibit mass gatherings, either planned or spontaneous. Sinas vowed to order the arrest of people who will violate the ‘community quarantine’ program and charge them with violation of the quarantine law and other provisions of the Revised Penal Code.
