TWO ranking officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue Manila District Office on Friday were arrested by agents of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for suspected bribery and extortion, the Journal Group learned.
Manila BIR District Revenue Officer Bethshiba Bautista and Manila BIR Examiner Rachel Villanueva were caught during an entrapment operation conducted by members of the CIDG Major Crimes Investigation Unit following a request for assistance from the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission.
The two were accused of demanding P2 million from an erring business company. However, only P500,000 of the total would go to the government coffers while the remaining P1.5 million would go to the revenue officers’ pockets.
On Friday afternoon, undercover CIDG-MICU operatives under Senior Superintendent Segundo Lagundi arrested the suspects after they were reportedly caught in the act of receiving the money from a poseur.
Recovered from the suspects’ possession were the boodle money topped by several marked bills, CIDG deputy director for administration Chief Supt. John Luglug said.
The two suspects who denied the accusations against them will be facing charges for direct bribery. They are being held at the CIDG headquarters in Camp Crame.
