MAYOR Isko Moreno led the celebration of the 122nd Philippine Independence Day with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Park monument in Ermita, Manila.
He was joined by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea who represented President Rodrigo Duterte and Flag Officer-In-Command of the Philippine Navy Vice Admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo in the said ceremony held at 9 a.m. and where only ten guests were in attendance as per guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF).
This year’s Independence Day is themed “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas.”
Moreno said that while the country pays tribute to those who have and continue to contribute in keeping the country safe and free, it is also but fitting to give recognition to those who continue to be at the frontlines of fighting COVID-19.
According to Moreno, these frontliners risk their lives and those of their loved ones by fulfilling their duties and distinct part in helping the government, both local and national, in fighting the pandemic.
He particularly cited the doctors, nurses, police, barangays, health personnel as well as private and government offices and units delivering essential services among others, as modern-day heroes who deserve to be recognized for their efforts.
