A series of anti-terror operations in Metro Manila aimed at preempting reported bombing plots during the past Yuletide season and the Traslacion led in the capture of two suspects, National Capital Region Police Office chief, Director Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar announced yesterday.
“We conducted special operations to pre-empt any terrorist activity in preparation for the celebration of yuletide season and Traslacion 2019. Sparked by intelligence reports, the NCRPO operations resulted in the arrest of terrorist group members on December 20 and December 25, 2018,” the official said.
One of the captured suspects is an Abu Sayyaf member accused of involvement in the kidnapping of 15 employees of Golden Harvest Plantations in Basilan in 2011.
Eleazar said that members of the NCRPO Regional Special Operations Unit (RSOU), NCRPO and Regional Intelligence Division (together with PNP Intelligence Group (PNP-IG) operatives last December 20 arrested one of the suspects at Elcano Street, Barangay 271, Binondo, Manila.
He identified the suspect as Sen a.k.a “Abu Nas”, Alias “Suhud”, “Jul” a.k.a. Sudais Asmad y Sali. He said that the suspect yielded a short firearm with a magazine and a loaded chamber.
Asmad was positively identified as a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group under the umbrella of the Dawlah Islamiyah under the group of Furuji Indama. He is the liaison and escort/guide of Balik-Islam from Luzon to Basilan Province. He is also part of the group from Basilan Province who was supposed to augment the group of the local terrorist group under Isnilon Hapilon during the “Marawi Siege”. He is in Manila purportedly to receive financial support from sympathizers of the Dawlah Islamiya and for other yet unknown missions.
A case for violation of Sec. 28, para (a) (Unlawful Acquisition or Possession of Small Arm) of R.A. 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act of 2013) was filed against Asmad.
Another member of a terrorist group was arrested through the information given by the official of Barangay Tondo to some MPD patrolling officers on December 25, 2018 at about 8:30 p.m. along Quezon Blvd. corner Norzagaray St., Quiapo, Manila.
The barangay official reported to the cops that he saw a suspicious male person with a pistol grip from the waist which was exposed while getting off a tricycle. Patrolling Manila police officers followed and observed the suspect.
Upon seeing the pistol grip on the suspect’s waist, the patrolling officers accosted the suspect, who could not produce the necessary permits for possessing a firearm.
The cops confiscated the firearm which was fully loaded and upon frisking the suspect also discovered a grenade in his possession. The cops arrested the suspect instantly.
The arrested suspect was identified as Jeran Aba alias Paito Pangadaman alias ABU SINAN, a member/ fighter of Dawlah Islamiya who was planning to conduct IED attack in NCR during the Holiday Season and incoming festivals.
Aba also admitted that he was a member of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in 2016 and joined Marawi Seige in 2017.
Cases of violation of RA 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Acts), Sec 3 of R.A 9516 (Illegal Possession of Explosives) and Resisting Arrest were filed against Aba.
With these accomplishments, the NCRPO further intensified its intelligence efforts and police operations that resulted in the generally peaceful celebration of yuletide season and Traslacion 2019, Eleazar said.
