P30M scam suspect captured in Tondo

AGENTS of the National Capital Region Field Unit of the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group on Wednesday afternoon arrested a 35-year old businessman accused of leading a syndicate which has duped unsuspecting victims of more than P30 million since last year, a report to PNP-CIDG chief, Major General Joel Napoleon M. Coronel said yesterday.

CIDG-NCR chief, Colonel Arnold Thomas C. Ibay, identified the accused as Richard Z. Abella alias ‘Rica,’ a 35-year old resident of 351 Alinian Street, Tondo, Manila.

Ibay said that the suspect was arrested during an entrapment operation conducted in front of 7-Eleven Store near the St. Mary Johnston Hospital in Tondo, Manila at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The official said that during the sting, members of the Manila CIDG District Field Unit led by Major Bryan Dexter Andulan and the Manila Police District Station 2 watched from a distance as a poseur gave P300,000 worth of boodle money topped by five marked P1,000 bills to the suspect.

Ibay said that the entrapment operation was launched amid a robbery-extortion  complaint from Jolebee Telebrico. Recovered from the suspect’s possession were the boodle money,  five marked P1,000 bills, two blank ‘Sanglang Income agreement and a photocopy of the Land Transportation Office identication card of one Richard Abella and a photocopy of the postal ID of one Rebecca Zubiaga.

According to the official, they were informed by the company that the accused is involved in syndicated and large-scale estafa activities targeting innocent friends and acquaintances.

The group is said to have started their notoriety in 2019 with almost 55 victims and closed to 30 million pesos carted. :They have started to reach nearby cities and provinces for their would-be victims before they were arrested,” said Ibay.

The official said that the so-called ‘Sanglang Tira/Sanglang Income’ was reported as one of the modus operandi of the suspect who will be facing charges for robbery-extortion and violation of Republic Act 172 of the Revised Penal Code.

Ibay said that the suspect is now under the custody of the Manila CIDG.
