AGENTS of the Philippine National Police Counter-Intelligence Task Force yesterday arrested a police corporal detailed with the Bureau of Immigration over charges of extorting money from the wife of a detained overstaying Korean national in exchange for his release.

PNP-CITF director Colonel Romeo M. Caramat Jr. said the suspect identified as Corporal Rommel Enrico was arrested at the gate of the National Capital Region Police Office headquarters in Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig City, after he received P200,000 in marked bills from the wife of Korean Kook Jin Chung at around 2:30 p.m.

Caramat said the entrapment operation stemmed from the complaint of Chung’s Filipina wife Meizzel Jeanni Culalay, a resident of Las Pinas City,   that she was told by the suspect that he could facilitate the immediate release of her husband for P200,000.

Feeling she was being duped, the woman went to the PNP-CITF headquarters to file a complaint against the suspect.

Criminal charges for violation of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and Direct Bribery were filed against the suspect.

He said that they will also recommend to National Capital Region Police Office chief, Major General Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar the filing of administrative charges for grave misconduct against the suspect.
