POLICE ‘Cybercops’ on Thursday arrested a man accused of extorting money from his 25-year old female Facebook friend by threatening to upload her nude photographs in the social media if his monetary demand is rejected, Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group director, Chief Superintendent Marni C. Marcos Jr., reported yesterday.
Marcos said that the suspect identified as Warren Gatchalian Sacluti, a resident of Sitio Mahogany, Barangay Cabanbanan in Pagsanjan, Laguna will be facing at least three criminal charges as a result of his grave offenses.
According to the official, Sacluti was arrested by a team of PNP-ACG operatives headed by Chief Inspector Joel Tuttuh inside a money transfer company along Boni Highway in Mandaluyong City at 9:20 a.m., Thursday while in the act of collecting the money he demanded from his victim.
Recovered from the possession of the suspect were P3,000 marked bills and a Samsung A7 phone which contained his text exchanges with the victim of photo-voyeurism and extortion.
Marcos said that the victim, a resident of Las Piñas City went to their office to file an official complaint against the suspect. It turned out that the woman sent her nude photographs to the suspect via Facebook Messenger.
Eventually, the suspect forced her to send him money so he would not upload her nude pictures via internet.
The suspect who is now being held at the PNP-ACT detention facility in Camp Crame will be facing criminal charges for violation of Republic Act No. 9995 (Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009), Grave Coercion under Article 286 and Robbery-Extortion under Article 294 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to Section 6 of RA No. 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, Marcos said.
The arrest of the suspect prompted Marcos to renew his appeal to the public to always maintain their vigilance and to remain discreet on any social media to avoid putting one’s security and even their reputation at risk with criminals taking advantage of modern technology and the cloak of anonymity in carrying out their sinister motives.
