QCPD condemns shooting of 2 volunteers

Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Director, Police Brigadier General Ronnie S Montejo, condemned the senseless shooting of two civilian volunteers manning a temporary barangay road closure resulting in the death of one and the wounding of the other last night in Barangay Bagong Silangan, Quezon City.

“The QCPD condemns the senseless and shameless shooting. It is certainly an act of cowardice by motorcycle-riding criminals against the volunteers  who made personal sacrifices amid the COVID 19 crisis,” PBGen Montejo said.

“I have already ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) and Batasan Police Station (PS 6) to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the motive or motives behind the shooting incident including illegal drugs,”he added.

PBGen Montejo also clarified that the victims were not actually manning a police checkpoint but a temporary road closure by Barangay Bagong Silangan to restrain or limit the entrance and exit of persons and vehicles due to the existing Enhanced Community Quarantine because of COVID 19.

The report showed that the victims identified as Ronald Cumayas, 38, married , painter , native of Bulacan, resident of Area 3 Dove St., Sitio Veterans , Barangay Bagong Silangan, and  Aldredo Batino, 20, single, air-con technician, residing in Area-3 Dove St. Sitio Veterans, Barangay Bagong-Pag-Asa Quezon City were manning the road closure on Eagle Street corner Dove St., Area 2 , Sitio Veterans, Bgy.  Bagong Silangan , QC at about 10:30 p.m April 1, 2020 when  four unidentified male suspects on board two (2) motorcycles arrived and fired successive gunshots towards them killing Cumayas on the spot.

Batino ran for safety but was hit in the right arm. He was rushed by barangay officials of to the East Avenue Medical Center.

Police investigators gathered at the crime scene ten pieces of fired cartridge cases for cal. 45, seven deformed slugs and one metallic jacketed fragment.
