NATIONAL Capital Region Police Office director Major General Debold M. Sinas yesterday said he has ordered the arrest and disarming of two members of the Marikina City Police Station accused of allegedly raping two of their female detainees.
The Metro Manila police chief identified the two accused policemen as Patrolman Arnold Geroy and Pat. Sonny Maruzzo, both members of the Marikina City Police Station Special Operations Unit.
According to the official, the two officers were arrested 5 a.m. Sunday inside their office following a complaint from two unnamed female detainees.
He said that the two were accused of raping the two women after subjecting them to a custodial debriefing following their arrest. Sinas said that the incident was discovered after the two detainees were returned to their detention cell and narrated the incident to the duty jailer.
Sinas said that following the complaint, the two were arrested and stripped of their service firearms and badge by members of the Marikina City Police Investigation and Detective Management Section and the station’s Special Reaction Unit.
On Monday afternoon, the two were brought to the Public Attorney’s Office in Marikina City where they were referred to lawyer Melita Lauron. On the same afternoon, both policemen were subjected to electronic inquest proceedings for violation of Republic Act 8353 or the anti-rape law.
"I am dismayed. Our authority as law enforcers can never be and should never be an instrument of any form of abuse. If proven with guilt, necessary sanctions will be justly imposed to these policemen for I will never tolerate crimes like this under my watch," an angry Sinas said as he vowed he will not hesitate to dismiss and send to jail rogue policemen in Metro Manila once they are found guilty of offenses.
