A pedicab driver was killed while his passenger was seriously injured when a speeding van hit them from behind yesterday morning in Caloocan City.
Jericho Ibañez, 48, of Block 16, Lot 3, Phase 2, Paradise Village, Tonsuya, Malabon City, died on the spot from severe head and body injuries while his passenger, Arlyn Quizol, 46, businesswoman, of Paradise Village, was rushed to Manila Central University (MCU) Hospital for treatment of injuries in the body.
Investigation showed that the victim was traversing along C-4 Road at around 5:30 p.m. heading to Malabon City when a speeding commercial van (XML-6502) travelling in the same direction with Manalastas Gerver, 32, of 1210 Kagitingan St., Tondo, Manila, as driver hit the rear of the pedicab.
Due to the strong impact, Ibañez’s head slammed the windshield of the van before he was thrown some five meters away and landed on his head on the pavement while his passenger was also thrown out and incurred body injuries.
Police learned that Ger-ver, who was placed under arrest after the incident, was holding a non-professional driver’s license which is not valid for driving a commercial or passenger vehicle.
A case for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property was filed against Gerver before the Caloocan City Prosecutor’s Office.
