CROSSING party lines, House Minority Leader and Quezon Rep. Danny Suarez bared yesterday that at least 126 lawmakers in the incoming 18th Congress have expressed support for the Speakership bid of Leyte Representative-elect Martin Romualdez.
Suarez made the revelation when asked in a press conference about his preference in the speakership race.
“They have already gathered I think about 126 signatures as a manifesto of support to Martin,” said Suarez.
Aside from Romualdez, other candidates for the speakership are Taguig-Pateros Representative-elect Alan Peter Cayetano, reelected Reps. Lord Allan Velasco of Marinduque, Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez of Davao del Norte, Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales, and Robert Ace Barbers of Surigao del Norte.
Romualdez, President of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa), called on his colleagues to respect Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio’s position not to endorse a candidate in the speakership fight.
He said all candidates in the speakership race are formidable.
Duterte-Carpio said she cannot meddle in the speakership race because she is “only the Mayor of Davao City.”
“I am not the correct person to endorse someone to be the next Speaker. I only have a personal bet but do not intend to influence Congress. It is best if the newly elected members of the House of Representatives individually decide who among those who are interested to become the next Speaker can truly bring good governance and positive change to Congress, to the Filipino people, and to our country,” said the Davao City mayor.
