Baste takes over from Sara on campaign trail

PRESIDENTIAL son Sebastian Duterte yesterday replaced his sister Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte–Carpio temporarily on the campaign caravan in the Bicol region.

Addressing the crowd in Camarines Norte, Duterte appealed to the public to support the candidates of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago so that they can help President Rodrigo Duterte  fast-track his legislative agenda.

“Napag-utusan ako ni Inday Sara kasi may family problem. Nagkasakit ang anak. Nanay kasi kaya hinahanap ng anak,” Duterte said.

His first time to speak on the campaign stage, Duterte cracked a joke to break the ice.

“Pagkatapos ko po ipakilala bawat kandidato palakpak po kayo. Sige na po maawa na kayo. Baka batukan ako ng kapatid ko sabihin wala ko nagawa nagkalat pa,” he said.

In his speech, the younger Duterte said the HNP candidates could be of good help to President Duterte in pursuing the administration programs.

“Mahalaga kasi na makapaglagay tayo ng mga senador natin sa lehislatura ng gubyerno natin. Sila yung gagawa ng batas at yung magpapatupad ng batas ay si Pangulong Duterte. Ngayon medyo mabagal, mabagal. Kelangan kasi ng tulong ni Pangulong Duterte. Sana suportahan ninyo para sa tuloy na pagbabago,” he added.

The HNP, which was founded by Mayor Duterte-Carpio, is  supporting 13 candidates, namely former MMDA chief Francis Tolentino; re-electionist Sonny Angara, Cynthia Villar, JV Ejercito and Koko Pimentel; former journalist Jiggy Manicad; former Special Assistant to the President Bong Go; former PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa; Ilocos Gov. Imee Marcos; Taguig City Rep. Pia  Cayetano; Maguindanao Rep. Dong Mangudadatu;  former  Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Jinggoy Estrada

Earlier, Mayor Duterte-Carpio announced that she was taking a short break from the campaign to attend to family matters in Davao.

She sent her younger brother who is fondly called Baste to campaign in her behalf in Bicol.

“Gusto sana naming sumama kayo sa amin. Hindi namin sasayangin ang boto ninyo. Nakita nyo naman ang Presidente natin, laging nagtatrabaho. Suportahan po ninyo kami. At sabay nating paunlarin ang Pilipinas,” Duterte also said.

After the Camarines Norte sortie, Duterte  will proceed to Camarines Sur where two campaign caravans are scheduled, one to be hosted by House Appropriations Chairman Rolando Andaya and the other by Camarines Sur Rep. LRAy Villafuerte.

For Camarines Norte, only two candidates attended, Manicad and Mangudadatu, because of the conflicting schedules of the PDP-Laban that will campaign in Isabela.
