BUREAU of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) chief Director Deogracias Tapayan has underscored the importance of firearms proficiency as he fired the ceremonial shots in the first round of a shoot-for-a-cause contest aimed at helping the victims of tropical depression Usman.

Over 100 participants composed of uniformed personnel and civilian shooters registered for the 3-day event that will end today.

Held at the Eagle Ridge Firing Range in Binangonan, Rizal, the 2nd Tapayan Cup is also to hone the skills of fire officers and at the same time to ensure their safety and order during jail management operations.

“It will be of great advantage for us jail officers that we don’t only carry firearms but we are also proficient on how to use it for safety and protection,” Tapayan said.

As he expressed gratitude to the participants of the event dubbed as Double Tap: Shoot For A Cause, Tapayan said  the amount to be generated from the activity will be donated to the victims of “Usman.”

“Let us not forget our social duty where we’ve been called to be united. Let us help our brothers and sisters affected by this recent calamity particularly in Bicol,” Tapayan said.

BJMP CALABARZON Regional Director Chief Supt. Efren Nemeño, who initiated the project, said he wanted to promote shooting as an enjoyable activity among BJMP personnel.

“This is an opportune time to bond and strengthen our camaraderie as jail officers. The only difference is that, this is for a worthy cause,” he explained.

He stressed that the activity was a small way of helping “our kababayans” in the regions that were affected by Usman.

The proceeds of the 1st Director Tapayan Cup last year were also given to victims of Tropical Storm Vinta that struck areas of Northern Mindanao, CARAGA and Zamboanga Peninsula.
