A DUMP truck driver in Gonzaga, Cagayan was arrested by the local police after he was found in possession of an unlicensed caliber 5.56 Bushmaster M-16 automatic rifle last Sunday, Police Regional Office 2 director, Chief Superintendent Jose Mario M. Espino said yesterday.
Suspect Christopher Gorospe, a 41-year old married resident of Barangay Centro West in Sta. Teresita town, was accosted by members of the Gonzaga Municipal Police Station conducting a regular Oplan: Sita/Oplan: Bakal inside the Unica Ija Videoke Bar in Bgy. Smart at 11 p.m. Sunday, the Cagayan Valley police director said.
Espino said thru a visual check, one officer spotted a rifle inside a mini-dump truck parked by Gorospe outside the videoke bar.
The weapon turned out to be an M-16 Bushmaster rifle with serial no. L899391 with 2 long magazines containing 49 live ammunition.
Espino said the suspect was placed under arrest after he failed to present pertinent gun papers including a License to Own and Possess Firearm and a Permit-to-Carry-Firearms-Outside-of-Residence.
The suspect was charged for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013.
Espino commended Cagayan Police Provincial Office director, Senior Supt. Warren Gaspar Tolito for their latest accomplishment in the campaign against loose firearms in the province.
He also ordered an investigation into the real source of the weapon recovered from the suspect amid the possibility that it could be part of weapons being used by members of a partisan armed group in the area.
