According to Quimbo, who did a computation, her estimates of the claims related to COVID-19 cases would only reach P3.2 billion.
During the hearing, Senior Vice President Nerissa Santiago said that based on their estimate, there will be 209,000 COVID cases in the country by the end of the year and the payouts for this will reach P45 billion.
But Quimbo explaned that based on global measures, only 20 percent of COVID-19 cases are hospitalized, and that 90 percent of Filipinos afflicted with COVID-19 are considered mild.
Quimbo said this higher projection of PhilHealth could be tantamount to fraud or corruption.
“Hindi yan aabot ng P45 billion. Ang worry ko is sa kaka-project ng napakalaki, nagkakaroon ng mas malaking leeway sa fraud. Iyan ang talagang binabantayan natin,” Quimbo added.
