THE Hugpong ng Pagbabago of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is fielding its own candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In a statement, the HNP announced that its candidate for speaker is comebacking Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab.
The HNP was founded by Mayor Sara together with some political kingpins of Davao Region for the mid-term elections. It formed the alliance with other political parties.
“Ungab is a four-term congressman and the only lawmaker to hold the chairmanships of both ways and means and appropriations committees,” read the HNP statement on the speakership race.
According to the HNP, the regional party has been patiently observing the developments in the House of Representatives.
Earlier, presidential son Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte said he was now thinking of joining the race due to the idea of term sharing pursued by another aspirant, Taguig City Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.
But the HNP is supporting Ungab because the group understands President Duterte, because of delicadeza, may not want Rep. Paolo to be the next Speaker.
Originally, Rep. Paolo is a member of the local party Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod, which is not a part of HNP.
Should Ungab became the Speaker, the HNP is proposing Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano to take the Majority Leader position, Rep. Lord Alan Velasco to take the Appropriations Committee, and Rep. Martin Romualdez to head the Accounts Committee.
“We earnestly hope that everyone can see the light in this option and move forward with urgency in serving our country,” it added.
Earlier, the PDP-Laban announced it is supporting Velasco, who is also allegedly being backed by Mayor Sara.
But more then 150 solons from the House of Representatives have already expressed support for Rep. Romualdez.
