PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said members of the LGBT community should not feel ashamed of themselves because they are created by God.
“Bakit ka mahiyang bakla? Gawa ka man ng Diyos,” Duterte said in a speech at the PDP-Laban campaign rally in Malabon City even as he slammed an unnamed gay critic.
“God created all of us. Male, female, tomboy, pati bakla,” he added.
Duterte once again claimed that he used to be gay and that he has two brothers-in-law who are homosexuals.
The President earlier said homosexual priests should be allowed to be in a same-sex union.
Malacañang said in July last year that Duterte was in favor of same-sex civil unions amid a pending petition before the Supreme Court seeking to strike down the heterosexual limits on marriage.
The Palace said the President was only against same-sex marriage and not civil partnerships for same-sex couples which is being pushed by some lawmakers.
A bill pending in the House of Representatives seeks to grant same-sex partners the rights to insurance, inheritance, adoption, property rights, and the right to take medical decisions.
