President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday said he tested negative for cancer.
“I’m not yet cancerous,” Duterte told reporters in Malacañang.
The President said the results of his diagnostic tests were negative.
“It’s negative for [cancer],” he said, after undergoing colonoscopy and endoscopy.
He admitted his doctors earlier suspected he had cancer.
He said his doctors warned him over his drinking habit.
“As of late, bumalik kasi ako (I went back to the habit). I don’t know for one reason or another, I just like to drink, brandy po. Ngayon sa totoo (Now actually), before I sleep, even if I’m alone, nag-three shots ako bago matulog (I have three shots before I sleep),” Duterte told reporters in a chance interview.
“Hindi naman ako cancerous so don’t be afraid to come near me.”
Duterte also denied reports that he underwent medical examination in his Hong Kong trip.
President Duterte yesterday also revealed that Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayertano is running in the May 2019 elections.
Duterte made the announcement when he entertained questions from the media during the oath-taking of newly elected officers of the Malacañang Press Corps.
Cayetano was among the names Duterte dropped when asked about Cabinet members who might be planning to seek elective posts in next year’s polls.
“Si Alan Peter Cayetano is also running,” Duterte said.
Other Cabinet members joining the race according to Duterte are Agrarian Reform Secretary John Castriciones, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr., and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Director General Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong.
Cayetano is running as congressman in his district, according to the President.
Asked who will replace Cayetano, Duterte said that he has already chosen one but declined to identify the person.
Asked if Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher “Bong” Go will be running, Duterte threw the question back to the reporters.
“Boboto kayo kay SAP?... Mag-sigurado ka. Boboto kayo? Why? No reason at all,” Duterte said, drawing laughter from the media.
Duterte clarified Go “is not Chinese,” saying while his father is of Chinese descent, Go belonged to the Tesoro clan of Batangas. “[But] I think he will run,” the President added.
The period for the filing of certificate of candidacy for next May’s polls will run from October 11 to 17.
Cayetano was a senator before being appointed as secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
