Duterte urged to certify bill on seniors’ expanded social pension as urgent

LAWMAKERS led by Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Mila Magsaysay-Aquino appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to certify as urgent the pending Expanded Universal Social Pension bill.

Rep. Magsaysay-Aquino said this will benefit some seven million senior citizens, especially the indigent. Under the bill, the monthly social pension of seniors will be increased from P500 to P1,000.

The House Committee on Population and Family Relations chaired by Laguna Rep. Sol Aragones already approved it and is now pending before the Committee on Appropriations.

The SC Party-list solon was joined by Aragones and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlo Isagani Zarate in urging the House leadership to pass the measure in the remaining session days before the long break next month.

The bill provides that aside from the indigent seniors, also those receiving below P3,500 pension from the Governmment Service Insurance Systems and Social Security System will get a monthly pension of P1,000.
