SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija – A motorcycle-riding assassin on Friday gunned down a candidate for councilor of this first-class town.
Allan Joson, 42, of Purok 3, Bgy. Julo, an independent candidate for councilor of this municipality, was the first casualty of Nueva Ecija politics in the run-up to next year’s midterm polls.
Joson was formerly elected as the town’s number one councilor before losing the vice mayoral race in the 2016 local polls.
Town police head Chief Insp. Marlon Cudal said the victim filed his certificate of candidacy just before the municipal elections office closed its office on Wednesday afternoon, the last day of CoC filing.
Joson was standing on the street a few meters away from his house and talking to his neighbors when shot several times by a lone motorcycle-riding armed man at 4:25 p.m. on Friday.
The victim, sustained several gunshot wounds that caused his instantaneous death.
The gunman fled the west after the killing.
Police are pursuing the suspect and investigating the motive for the killing, including politics.
Recovered at the crime scene were several fired cartridge cases for a cal. 9mm pistol.
Cudal said the victim was not related to the Joson political family, who reigned in the province for several decades.
