Fake cop falls in entrapment

AGENTS of the Philippine National Police Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group (PNP-IMEG) late Saturday afternoon arrested a 59-year old fake cop who claimed he could help secure a height waiver for an under-height PNP applicant in exchange for a ‘processing fee’ which totaled P64,000, PNP-IMEG director, Colonel Romeo M. Caramat Jr. said yesterday.

In a report to PNP chief, Director General Oscar D. Albayalde, the official said  suspect Robel Yap Canlas was arrested during an entrapment operation inside a Mini-Stop branch in Del Pilar Street, Barangay San Rafael in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Recovered from the suspect’s possession were the P40,000 in marked bills he received from the complainant, the PNP-IMEG director said. The suspect also yielded one backpack marked with the words ‘PNP,’ one caliber .45 pistol with six live ammunition, one fake PNP identification card and a fake PNP badge.

According to Caramat, they conducted the sting following a complait from female PNP applicant Maureen Coronel, a resident of Upper Bangkal in Rodriguez who claimed that in August last year, the suspect introduced himself to her as ‘SPO2 Gerome Canlas’ and offered to help her get a height waiver in exchange for P40,000.

Caramat said that on October 23 last year, the complainant personally gave P40,000 to the accused and was told to just wait for the release of her height waiver from the National Police Commission.

However, a week after the promised waiver did not come, the victim said that she was again asked by the suspect to produce another P20,000 she needs for her neuro-psychiatric and medical examination. The official said that believing that the suspect was for real, the complainant again sent him P20,000 thru the Palawan Express Padala.

Caramat said last May 23, the suspect went to the victim’s workplace in FTI Taguig City and gave her a v-neck T-shirt and a short pants he said she would be using in her medical examination.

Last June 6, the victim was asked by the suspect to meet him outside Camp Crame where he instructed her to have a neuro-examination in an office located outside the PNP national headquarters and just wait for its result.

The PNP-IMEG director said  the victim got fed up when the suspect demanded another P4,000 from her as ‘additional processing fee’ for her PNP application papers and sought their help in the conduct of the entrapment operation.

The fake cop is now being held at the PNP-IMEG detention facility in Camp Crame while charges for robbery-extortion and usurpation of authority are being readied against him, said Caramat.
