IN a bid to cushion the effects of the COVID-19 on the economy, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano is urging the economic and infrastructure team to fast-track the infrastructure projects of the government.
Cayetano has expressed concern over the huge losses in the tourism industry due to the scare over the corona virus which originated from China.
“’Yung appeal ko sa economic team at sa infrastructure team, habang ‘yung uncertainty ng COVID-19 nandiyan, at habang maaapektuhan ang international tourism, agahan niyo ang pag-release at pagpapagawa ng infra projects,” Cayetano said.
During the past hearing of the joint House Committee on Economic Affairs and Tourism, the Department of Tourism reported that the local tourism industry is expected to lose an estimated P42.9 billion from February to April this year due to fears over the virus.
Cayetano stressed that the construction projects lined up under the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build program as well as other government small, medium, and large scale infrastructure projects can definitely create jobs in various parts of the country and boost the local economy.
The House leader likewise believed that these can help absorb the possible “temporary displacement” of workers in the tourism industry during this “uncertain period” while the COVID-19 continues to spread across the world.
“Number one, so ‘yung ibang tourism-related jobs, pwedeng tumulong sa construction. Number two, para tamaan niyo ‘yung March, April, May na tag-init na mas maraming magagawa. Number three, pagka walang problema, walang health issues, walang weather issues, traffic everywhere. Pagka nag-construct ka, lalong traffic,” he further said.
