Gamboa orders cops to give free rides to women, kids

ACTING on instructions from President Duterte, Philippine National Police chief, General Archie Francisco F. Gamboa yesterday ordered police forces nationwide to provide free ride to old and young women and children alike and bring them to their destinations if possible.

“I am instructing all our police forces to serve the pregnant, our elderly women, women with children and the like by allowing them to ride in our vehicles up to boundaries or even to their destinations,” the PNP chief said.

The order requires police patrol vehicles as well as trucks and other carriers to provide free lift to women and children waiting for all forms of available transport on the streets and other major thoroughfares while they are on their way to the market, hospitals or other places of destination while all forms of public transport is still prohibited due to the Enhanced Community Quarantine.

The PNP chief said his instruction is for his men to extend every possible assistance to women in distress especially those who need to make essential travel to buy food, medicine and other basic needs.

“We recognize the vulnerability of women who need to go outside their homes to do essential chores especially among elderly and pregnant women,” Gen. Gamboa said.

The PNP has been providing ‘Libreng Sakay’ to health workers and other front-liners as well as stranded commuters in Metro Manila and the rest of the country since the Luzon-wide lockdown was enforced to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus last March 17.
