JUSTICE Secretary Menardo Guevarra yesterday scoffed at reports of alleged threats to Bureau of Corrections personnel shortly after news broke out regarding the death of several high-profile inmates at the New Bilibid Prison.

BuCor is an attached agency of the Department of Justice.

"The BuCor people are accustomed to threats from inside and outside the prison walls due to the nature of their job. They have adapted and they know what precautions to take," Guevarra said.

"Sanay ang BuCor sa ganyan. They co-exist with the most dangerous people in the country. They are on alert 24/7," Guevarra added.

BuCor has gone on heightened alert following reports of threats to its corrections officers.

Bureau spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said they increased their security amid numerous threats to their officers lately.

The DOJ recently confirmed that convicted carnapper Jaybee Sebastian died due to COVID-19 complications and his remains cremated in accordance with pandemic protocols.

Sebastian reportedly died while undergoing treatment at the NBP hospital due to acute myocardial infarction as a complication of COVID-19.

Sebastian hogged the headlines when he testified before a House committee investigating the alleged involvement of detained Sen. Leila de Lima in the illegal drugs trade in 2016.
