A PASAY City police captain heading the local police’s intelligence division yesterday afternoon was killed in a gunbattle with an armed killer who escaped from the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology last August, grieving National Capital Region Police officials said.

Senior Inspector Manuel Junior Taytayon, a proud graduate of the Philippine National Police Academy, died while trading shots with fugitive Marc ‘Nico’ Delemios at the 4th floor of Block 23, Lot 1 in Don Carlos Revilla Village in Barangay 148, Zone 4, Pasay City at 2:20 p.m. yesterday, said Southern Police District director, Senior Superintendent Eliseo DC Cruz.

According to the official, Taytayon suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died while being taken to the San Juan de Dios Hospital. However, before he was killed, the bemedaled officer managed to shoot Delemios to death.

In a report to National Capital Region Police Office chief, Director Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar, the SPD director said Senior Inspector Taytayon was leading a group of officers from the Pasay City Police Station Intelligence Section who went to check a report that Delemios was spotted hiding in the said building.

He said Taytayon and his men coordinated with the Pasay City Police-Community Precinct 6 their operation to possibly arrest the suspect. However, as the policemen were about to enter the suspect’s hiding place, they were met with gunfire.

Cruz said Taytayon was hit several times in the body but managed to retaliate killing the suspect instantly.

He said the wounded officer was declared dead upon arrival at the San Juan de Dios Hospital by attending physician, Dr. Manuelito Jose Gacad at 2:49 in the afternoon.

Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect  was a loaded handgun which he used in shooting the officer.

Cruz said Delemios was the man arrested for killing a Grab driver named Gerardo Maquidato in October 2017 before escaping while under the custody of the BJMP-run Pasay City Jail last August.
