House to keep watch on government fight against virus

AFTER giving the President special emergency powers, the House of Representatives want to keep an eye on how the national government combats the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

During the late hours of the special session, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano moved to form an ad hoc committee to which he was elected as chairman.

Cayetano appointed Majority Leader Martin Romualdez as co-chairman and invited other solons to join the committee.

The House leader vowed that it will be a working committee that will focus on the response of the government to the pandemic.

“If I don’t hear any objection, we will form an ad hoc committee called the Defeat COVID-19 Committee and together with the Filipino people, we will defeat COVID-19,” Cayetano said.

For a week now, the entire Luzon has been under enhanced community quarantine, however the number of Filipinos testing positive for COVID-19 is rising.

Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Romualdez said that the committee shall focus on “all matters directly and principally relating to the appropriate government response on the novel coronavirus and how to curb its effect on the economy and the general public especially the labor force.”

The committee shall include House committees on health, economic affairs, tourism, trade and industry, labor and employment, public information, banks and financial intermediaries, appropriations, ways and means, local government and Metro Manila development.

“This committee will be a working committee. We will do a lot of work from home. We will do it through digital. There will be a lot of meetings,” Cayetano added.
