House revamp

Following coup rumors, allies of suspected ouster plot leader lose major chairmanships

FOLLOWING reports of a coup plot, the House leadership reshuffled three major committees.

The House removed Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee.

ACT-CIS Rep. Eric Go Yap, a neophyte solon, was elected as new chairman of the committee that hears the national budget.

Meanwhile, Yap was replaced by Abra Rep. Joseph Sto Nino Benos as chairman of the House Committee on Games and Amusement.

Also replaced was Oriental Mindoro Rep. Doy Leachon as chairperson of the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET).

The House elected Kabayan Rep. Ron Salo as the new HRET Chairperson.

Earlier, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed there is a coup attempt being plotted by Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco and his allies.

According to Cayetano, Velasco with the help of some influential solons has started promising committee chairmanships and funds in exchange for their support.

In the case of Ungab, there are rumors that he allegedly tried to stop the release of budget for the lawmakers who have pending projects for their constituents.

Leachon on the other hand had issued a statement hitting the allies of Speaker Cayetano.

In a short statement, Ungab accepted his fate and will no longer question the decision of the leadership.

“I believe that the only guide to a man is his conscience, and the truth will always prevail no matter what. I have served my country and people well to the utmost of my ability. I accept my fate and so be it,” Ungab said.
